Looking After

for orchestra

Looking After was inspired by a vivid dream in which I observed some familiar places over a period of several hundred years. The images of these sites evolving over time—for the most part gradually, but sometimes with sudden events—informed my compositional techniques. Rhythmic motives often begin quietly in the background, emerge into prominence, and dissipate. Harmonies are constructed one pitch at a time with the entrance and exit of different voices, perhaps suggesting the inhabitants who lived and died in these locations. Long melodic lines undergo changes in timbre, reflecting the way our world can be constantly shifting and yet essentially still the same.

The instrumentation is 2222/2231/timp+1/strings. Please contact Rebekah if you are interested in purchasing this piece.
